Cultural exchange between Fundación Superemos and Laguna de Perlas
A cultural exchange was held between a total of thirteen people from Estelí with cultural groups in the municipality of Pearl Lagoon. The participation of ethnic groups from Pearl Lagoon, located in Nicaragua’s southern Caribbean Coast, included dance and music presentations by the garífuna community in Orinoco, and in Pearl Lagoon itself by the communities of Awas, Raytipuras and Haulover who performed presentations of dance, music, art and customs of their localities over two days.
From Estelí, which is located in central northern Nicaragua, the students and teachers of Sones Segovianos gave presentations on their teaching methodology, of traditional folk music featuring violin and guitar, along with dances typical of northern Nicaragua performed by students of Estelí’s School of Culture "Leonel Rugama", named after the city’s famous revolutionary poet.
In addition to the presentations of Nicaraguan culture there were theater education workshops with visiting Spanish theater specialist Amanda Velloso which enjoyed the enthusiastic participation of over 120 local young people and children.
We are very grateful to the local municipal authority of Estelí and to the local municipal authority of Pearl Lagoon for providing the transport facilities necessary for this exchange and also for financial support from Larry Fisk, Gayle Nielsen and Abra Fisk, Dr. Agustín Velloso and others for covering the costs of food and accommodation without which the visit to Pearl Lagoon would have been impossible.
