Medical brigades to La Montañita and Guingajapa

On March 2nd and March 3rd, Superemos coordinated two medical brigades with Estelí’s local health authority to the communities of La Montañita, near Estelí, and Guingajapa, near San Nicolás. The brigades attended a total of 294 patients, 61 children and 233 adults. The group from Superemos was composed of our ICES program social work team Sindy Alvarado and Maria Felix Castillo (psychologist Karen Villarreyna is on maternity leave) accompanied by 2 fourth year students from the social work faculty of the local campus of Nicaragua’s National Autonomous University and four students from the same university’s faculty of medicine. The health ministry staff accompanying the brigade consisted of 4 general medical practitioners, two pediatricians, a natural medicine specialist, a dentist, a general surgeon, a gynaecologist, an internal medicine specialist, and also laboratory worker who did 411 lab tests. The group also had support for x-rays and ultrasound as well as nursing support to do papanicolau exams and attend to patients with chronic illnesses.
