Follow up visit to Prinzapolka
In April this year thanks to donations from the Belgium and Luxemburg Quakers and from supporters in the United States, Superemos was able to purchase seed to assist families in the municipality of Prinzapolka who lost practically everything during the two hurricanes Eta and Iota in November 2020.
Prinzapolka is one of Nicaragua's most impoverished areas, where a large part of the population lives along the River Prinzapolka. Over 250km in length, the river starts in the Cordillera Isabella in the department of Jinotega and flows out to the Caribbean Sea.
With the donated funds Superemos made a joint purchase with the social programs division of the local mining company HEMCO, which is based about 80km away in Bonanza. For its part, Superemos purchased 2000 pounds of maize seed, 2000 pounds of bean seed and 2700 pounds of rice seed. The local municipal authority in the municipality’s administrative capital, Alamikamba, distributed the seed in 25 pound sacks to families along the river Prinzapolka in seven communities: Aguas VIlas, Tasba Pauni, Garnacha, Karindan, Ceiba, Buena Vista and Dos Amigos.
The rice seed, which was distributed first, benefited a total of 180 families in four communities. In total, we were told that just over 300 families benefited from the donation of the seed provided by Superemos with priority being given in particular to families caring for elderly relatives.
Two members of Superemos returned to Alamikamba in September this year to visit families who were able to recover from the effects of the hurricanes thanks to the combined support they received from national and local government, from local private busineeses and community organizations like Superemos. This video documents our visit to the miskito community of Karindan.
